The World’s Billionaires

Beate Heister and Karl Albrecht Jr. are the children of Karl Albrecht Sr., who died in July 2014 at age 94. After World War II, he and his brother Theo Albrecht, who died in 2010 at the age of 88, took over their family’s corner grocery store in Essen, Germany and propagated the discount revolution in German retailing — building their Aldi supermarket chain based on a no-frills, low-price strategy similar to Wal-Mart.

10 Richest People In Germany

Karl Albrecht changed the retail trade (in Germany) forever. After his death in 2014, his two children, Karl Albrecht Jr. and Beate Heister (born Albrecht) became the “owner” of the 21 billion dollar asset and thereby the second richest people in Germany. Karl Albrecht senior and his brother Theo Albrecht Jr. (see point 4) are the founders of the discount supermarket “Aldi“. It all began with the expansion of a small grocery shop in the postwar years, they both got from their parents. The recipe for the huge success of “Aldi”: restricted range of goods, cheap stores, a high turnover rate and quality products. While almost every German knows “Aldi” and is buying at least some of his or her stuff there, the two brothers lived an almost hidden life without photos, interviews or public appearances. A story says that Karl Albrecht (the richer one and owner of “Aldi south“) internalized this habit or rule, because of an “incident” during his engagement party with his later wife. He celebrated it with a lot of people and also a lot of dishes. As many people were hungry in the postwar years, so they came to Albrecht and shouted: “We are hungry“. Albrecht was married for 67 years until she died in 2013, one year before him.
